  • Pricing: Special Discounted Pricing for field trips starts at 20 people. Your field trip must be at least 20 people to receive discounted admission. Field trips for schools, daycare centers, senior living, and non-profits: with a group of 20 or more, your tickets are discounted $2 per ticket, from $16.50 to $14.50 each.
  • Please Note: We do not have a party room.

Safari Rules & Checklist

Part of going on an authentic safari is being prepared. Check off this list before heading on your safari!

  • no open shoes icon. Closed shoes are required. Animal experiences take you into the animal exhibit.
  • Please wash your hands before and after petting the animals. There are hand washing stations throughout the Safari.
  • Food is not allowed past the front desk for the safety of all guests and animals. An admission ticket grants all-day access to Sustainable Safari®. We stamp your hand for easy re-entry.
  • Plan your day-trip meal around the Safari. The food court at Maplewood Mall has plenty of options, or check out the surrounding dining options.

Africa

African Animal Species:

African hedgehogAfrican Hedgehog

MAP Location: Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

AT THE SAFARI: The African hedgehog can be viewed with admission. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, so look carefully for the sleeping hog near the Palawan porcupine exhibit.

MAP Location: Italy, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, Sicily, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Libya, and Egypt.

AT THE SAFARI: The African porcupines can be viewed and fed with admission. They are located on the south side of the safari between the goat and grison exhibits.

Ball PythonBall python

Map Location: Senegal, Ghana, Chad, Sudan, Cameroon, and Uganda.

AT THE SAFARI: Ball pythons are available to view at Sustainable Safari® with admission in the center of the safari in the “Hissing Booth” tank area.

  • With the help of a Safari Guide, Snake holdings are available ($5, Ages 5+). Ball pythons are non-venomous, and our friendly animal ambassadors, Freddy and Barney, the ball pythons are ready to meet you!

KusimanseKusimanse

Map Location: Ghana, Ivory Coast, Benin, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

At the Safari: Kusimanse are available to view with admission near the safari entrance. These mongoose relatives are small and adorable. Look for them running in their tubes along the Malaysian binturong exhibit or climbing their bridge platforms behind the front of the Muntjac deer exhibit.

Map Location: Southwestern Madagascar.

At the Safari: The ring-tailed lemur can be viewed with admission near the back of the safari. These lesser primates live in groups and communicate through loud howls.

  • Feed them up close by hand with a Safari Guide during the specialized Lemur Feeding ($10, Ages 10+).

Thomson's gazelleThomson’s gazelle

Map Location: Kenya and Tanzania.

At the Safari: Our Thomson’s gazelle named Tommy is available to view, pet, and feed with admission at the safari for the season. His exhibit is on the north side of the safari with our capybara named Uno.

Asia

Asian Animal Species:

BinturongBinturong/Bearcat

Map Location: Northeast India, Bangladesh, Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and the Philippines.

At the Safari: With admission, you can view the binturong up close in their exhibit and notice they smell like popcorn! There are two species of binturong on exhibit at the Safari. The Malaysian binturong, Burt, is near the front of the safari in the middle. The Palawan binturong siblings, Handsome and Greta, are near the back of the safari, between the Guinea pigs and ring-tailed lemurs. Look up, as they are arboreal or tree-dwelling creatures!

  • With the binturong experience ($25, Ages 10+), pet and hand-feed these beautiful and curious cat-bear-like creatures in the binturong exhibit.

Goat (Pygmy)

Map Location: Goats originated from Southwest Asia and can now be found worldwide!

AT THE SAFARI: Look high and low for our goat families on their floor-to-ceiling-high exhibits! Goats love climbing and jumping to high places. There are goat pulleys to place food in and lift it to their second-story platform. On each side of the Safari are goats to feed and pet with admission.

  • Hold a baby goat ($5, ages 5+) with the help of a Safari Guide and see how cuddly they can be.

Australia

Australia/Oceania Animal Species:

Map Location: Sri Lanka, Australia, Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia.

At the Safari: Hand-feed a flock of parakeets with an optional $4 Tree House seed stick. (Entering the parakeet exhibit is free with admission.) The Tree House is made of multiple animal exhibits. Exist among the parakeets, frogs, and other species inside The Tree House experience (All Ages).

At the Safari: With admission, the adult red kangaroos are available to feed with your complimentary feed cup.

  • Meet the baby kangaroos (joeys) with the assistance of a Safari Guide during a kangaroo holding ($15, Ages 5+) to experience these adorable marsupials up close.

At the Safari: With admission, the sugar gliders can be viewed near the cashier window. These adorable fuzzy marsupials live in groups. Look closely to find them in their nest pouches.

Map Location: Originates from the Flemish Giant Rabbit from Belgium/Germany.

AT THE SAFARI: Giant and Rex rabbits are available to view and feed with admission. They are located in the middle of the safari next to the prehensile porcupine exhibit.

North American Species:

Map Location: South + Southeast United States – Florida, Texas, Louisiana, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.

At the Safari: The American alligators are available to view with admission. The alligator pool is near the back of the safari between the iguana and capybara exhibit.

Prairie dogPrairie dog

Map Location: Western United States – Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

At the Safari: The prairie dogs are located near the back of the Safari next to the armadillo exhibit. Feed the prairie dogs with our clever “fishing pole” feeding station, which is included with admission. These rodents live in groups and are extremely social critters.

Map Location: Southern United States – Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and Florida.

At the Safari: Armadillos are available for viewing only. Ask a safari team member for assistance petting the armadillo ambassadors. These solitary ground-dwelling creatures have hard outer armor made of keratin, the same material our fingernails are made of!

At the Safari: Capybaras are located near the back or west end of Sustainable Safari®.

  • Meet our proud Capybara ambassadors. Enter the capybara exhibit and hand-feed the world’s largest rodent during the Capybara experience ($15, Ages 5+.)

Guinea Pig

Map Location: Peru, highland Bolivia, northwestern Argentina, and northeastern Chile.

At the Safari: Guinea Pig Village is located near the back or west end of Sustainable Safari®. These adorable rodents are social and live in groups.

  • Enter the Guinea Pig Village exhibit and hand-feed the village residents during the Guinea pig experience ($5, Ages 5+.)

Prehensile-tailed Porcupine

Map Location: South American forests of Venezuela, Guiana, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Trinidad, and some extreme northern sections of Argentina.

At the Safari: The prehensile-tailed porcupine is on exhibit in the middle of the safari next to the bunny rabbit exhibit. You can view these exciting creatures with admission.

    Red-tailed Boa Constrictor

    Map Location: Colombia south to northern Argentina.

    At the Safari: The red-tailed boas are located near the middle of Sustainable Safari® in the “Hissing Booth” for viewing with admission.

    • Hold one of the giant non-venomous snakes with the assistance of a Safari Guide: large snake holding ($10, Ages 10+)

    Map Location: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru.

    At the Safari: Meet our playful marmoset ambassadors through their viewing-only exhibit. They are located in the center of the safari. The marmoset is a highly social animal, forming family units of 2-15 individuals.

    Red-footed Tortoise

    Map Location: South America from Panama to Argentina.

    At the Safari: These gentle creatures are available to view with admission. They are in the middle of the safari inside the sloth exhibit and near the “Hissing Booth.”

    • Hold a tortoise ($5, Ages 5+) is available for an up-close experience with the assistance of a Safari Guide.

    Two-toed Sloth

    Map Location: Central America and northern South America, including portions of Brazil and Peru.

    At the Safari: Meet our two-toed sloth, Jennifer Slo-pez. She is available for viewing with admission in the middle of the safari. These interesting creatures are only awake for up to four hours a day!

    • Meet her up close and feed her only with the Guided Safari Tour!

    tayra Tayra

    Map Location: Central and South America. It ranges from Mexico south to Bolivia and northern Argentina and also on the island of Trinidad.

    At the Safari: Cain the Tayra is available to view with admission in the middle of the Safari. Look high, look low! Cain’s exhibit is between the marmoset and the Malaysian binturong exhibit. His exhibit also extends around the top of the middle section of the Safari. You will see him running down the long tunnels near the ceiling!

    • Feed Cain from outside his exhibit by dropping a carnivore egg ($1.75 ea. or 4/$5) down a convenient food tube.

    Are reservations required?

    Nope! Reservations are not required for general admission. If you wish to take a Guided Safari Tour, you can make a reservation by booking online or in-store. You can also contact us about birthday parties and more!

    Is the Safari inside or outside of the mall?

    Sustainable Safari® is located inside Maplewood Mall on the second floor at the Southwest end of the Mall. Park in Kohl’s upper-level parking lot and enter Maplewood Mall door #2.

    How long are the one-on-one experiences with animals?

    Each animal experience has a variable length of time. Holdings last 3-4 minutes.

    How long is a regular visit to Sustainable Safari®?

    Anywhere from one hour to four hours or all day. The Safari is entirely self-guided; it depends on how much time you spend at each animal exhibit. With dozens of species to view and interact with, plan at least a few hours of your day around the Safari to receive the entire experience. We stamp your hand for easy re-entry. All paid admission includes an all-day pass!

    Are capybaras currently available at Sustainable Safari®?

    Yes! The capybara is always available to feed, pet, and interact with at Sustainable Safari. Multiple families are rotated from our farm to the Safari.
